One of my plant allies, and favorite medicines to work with, is Rosa Rugosa (aka beach roses). As the heat of summer begins to fade, and the cooler months approach, the fruit of the rose bush start to ripen. Around this time every year, I ride my bike to the beach in the wee hours of the morning, so I arrive just as the sun kisses my cheeks. With my harvesting basket slung over my arm, I kick off my shoes with a smile and make my way through the sandy paths, greeting the awaiting bushes with a tune of gratitude, while I carefully pluck their ripened fruit.

She lives in extreme conditions, right on the shores of the Northern Atlantic, utterly exposed — weathering storms, intense heat, and freezing temperatures, with nothing to secure her to the earth except sand, and the support of her sisters beside her.

Despite these odds, she thrives. Her root system is strong + prevents erosion of the coastline. Her thorns protect her delicate flowers + fruit, so they can fully bloom + express. Rose reminds us that we are safe, protected, and strong. She gently encourages and supports the energetic heart, especially one suffering from deep grief.

This is pure heart medicine.
